Donald Trump tweeted: "After consultation with our Great Military Leaders, designers, and others, I am pleased to present the new logo for the United States Space Force, the Sixth Branch of our Magnificent Military!"
It features an arrowhead shape centred on a planetary background and encircled by the words ‘United States Space Force’ and ‘Department of the Air Force' which seems to be borrowed from the United States Emblem of Air Force Space Command.
Now here's the logo for Starfleet Command a derivative of the emblem that came in1966. In the Star Trek universe, Starfleet is the uniformed space force maintained by the United Federation of Planets as the principal branch that conducts deep-space exploration, research, defense, peacekeeping and diplomacy. The logo is also similar to the insignia of the Air Force Space Command, which was the precursor to the Space Force, hosting 16,000 active duty airmen and civilians.
At first glance there are definitely some similarities. they both got an upward facing arrow both have certain orbiting objects, both have a star field, both are round and both have their names on the outer edge of the emblem but is it a rip-off though? No and here’s why
If you've ever seen remotely studied space and military insignias you know there's a super long and complex history behind each of them and that there is a process to get them approved. Suffice to say they all have to go through the US Army Institute of heraldry for approval. That department designs and furnishes all the emblems seals and insignias for the Armed Forces and other government agencies.
Here's some other examples of space logos.
The meatball is the one most people will recognize and was created in 1959. Also, there's China's space agency, Russia's and India looks like they all try to copy Starfleet come in. Right?
The Delta symbol which is the triangle and the center of all these has been used by the military since at least 1942 when the US Army Air Force use it and the US Air Force has been using the shape since at least 1961.
Star Trek came out in 1966 and the US Air Force Space Command logo came out in 1982 so no the space force does not rip-off Star Trek. If anything Star Trek was inspired by the US military to use this symbol, this makes sense since Gene Roddenberry and other tap on the show were in the military and served during World War 2. quote from www.startrek.com the studio straight-up admits that the inspiration for the Starfleet emblem comes from NASA.
