Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) Launches Digital Drivers License and ID | Apple Wallet

The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has taken a significant leap forward in enhancing the driving experience for residents across the state with the introduction of the Georgia Digital Drivers program. This groundbreaking initiative aims to revolutionize the way drivers interact with the DDS, offering a seamless digital platform that combines convenience, accessibility, and advanced technology.

Commissioner Spencer R. Moore has announced that the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) will now offer residents the opportunity to add their valid Georgia driver's license and ID to their iPhone and Apple Watch. This new feature allows customers to securely present their digital driver's license and ID using their Apple devices at select TSA security checkpoints, including those at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Georgia is the largest state to introduce this service, providing an easy and secure way for residents to present their license or ID without needing the physical card.

Governor Brian Kemp expressed his appreciation to DDS and their partners for making this innovative service possible, emphasizing Georgia's commitment to remaining at the forefront of emerging trends. The governor looks forward to this option being widely available for both Georgians and visitors.

How to add Georgia Digital Driver's License and ID to Apple Wallet

To add a Georgia digital driver's license or ID to Apple Wallet, residents need a valid and easily readable Georgia driver's license or ID card. Additionally, they need to have an iPhone 8 or a newer model, or an Apple Watch 4 or a newer model, running the latest version of iOS or watchOS. It is also necessary to set the device's location to the United States.

Adding a driver's license or state ID into Apple Wallet is a easy process that can be completed in a few simple steps. Georgia residents can access Apple Wallet on their iPhone, tap the + button located at the top of the screen, choose the option "Driver's license or State ID," and then follow the provided on-screen instructions to initiate the setup and verification procedure.

To present a Georgia digital driver’s license or ID in Apple Wallet at a TSA checkpoint, residents can simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader. Residents’ devices will then display what information is being requested by the TSA, and only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested information released from a device. Since the information is shared digitally, residents do not need to hand over their iPhone or Apple Watch to present their Georgia digital driver’s license or ID in Apple Wallet.

“Get ready to reimagine the way you use your driver’s license. Over time, we expect the locations accepting Georgia Digital Driver’s License and IDs to grow, but we are excited now to allow customers the option to present their credential easily and securely at TSA checkpoints,” said DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore. “We value the opportunity to work with Apple and TSA to bring this convenience to our residents.”

DDS reminds customers that a Georgia Digital Driver’s License or ID in their Apple Wallet is voluntary and comes at no additional cost, and Georgians must continue to carry their physical driver’s license or ID with them.
